Comparison of some types of Internet access
20/07/2017
Some tests of different types of Internet access give:
| Type of access | IP | Reception | max | Sending | max | Latency | min | jitter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Distant Wi-Fi | fixed | 0.241 | 0.657 | 0.36 | 0.514 | 186.1 | 39 | 1060 |
| Ethernet via PLC | fixed | 5.523 | 5.758 | 0.708 | 0.788 | 42.17 | 39.8 | 7.4 |
| Orange 3G Wi-Fi | variable | 8.194 | 11.28 | 0.417 | 0.542 | 268.2 | 91.58 | 332.3 |
| Close Wi-Fi | fixed | 11.89 | 12.28 | 0.791 | 0.84 | 80.91 | 38.91 | 171.2 |
| Direct Ethernet | fixed | 11.95 | 12.12 | 0.639 | 0.708 | 41.05 | 37.54 | 8.39 |
| Free 4G Wi-Fi | variable | 70.87 | 77.5 | 7.28 | 8.988 | 129.5 | 54.17 | 158.2 |
Reception and sending rates are in Mb/s, latency and jitter in ms.
For the best reception:
- Free 4G Wi-Fi
- Direct Ethernet
- Close Wi-Fi
- Orange 3G Wi-Fi
- Ethernet via PLC
- Distant Wi-Fi
For the fastest sending:
- Free 4G Wi-Fi
- Close Wi-Fi
- Ethernet via PLC
- Direct Ethernet
- Orange 3G Wi-Fi
- Distant Wi-Fi
For the best reactivity:
- Direct Ethernet
- Ethernet via PLC
- Close Wi-Fi
- Free 4G Wi-Fi
- Distant Wi-Fi
- Orange 3G Wi-Fi
For the best stability:
- Ethernet via PLC
- Direct Ethernet
- Free 4G Wi-Fi
- Close Wi-Fi
- Orange 3G Wi-Fi
- Distant Wi-Fi
Summary (all criteria):
- Direct Ethernet
- Free 4G Wi-Fi
- Ethernet via PLC
- Close Wi-Fi
- Orange 3G Wi-Fi
- Distant Wi-Fi
In short:
- 4G is really fast if not stable.
- Direct Ethernet and close Wi-Fi are equivalent.
- The worst is too distant Wi-Fi.
These conclusions are just indicative: in practice, test results are specific to a given place and time.
